The Stables Bed & Breakfast in Colsterworth is a recently converted set of stable buildings that offer both self catered and bed & breakfast accommodation. Less than a mile from the A1, but in open countryside, the location offers a great base for guests who are holidaying in the Lincolnshire and Rutland countryside, who are visiting family and friends locally or for business clients who are working in the Grantham or Stamford area.
After staying ourselves in accommodation ranging from five star hotels to gites in France we have used our experience to create a bed and breakfast experience that reflects how we think ‘Bed & Breakfast’ should be. A traditional warm welcome and a relaxing atmosphere welcome you on arrival complimented by a wholesome breakfast and a superior standard of accommodation with tasteful decor and furnishings.
We pride ourselves on the standard of the breakfast we offer and are passionate about simple, locally sourced ingredients. In the morning we serve breakfast in our traditional farmhouse kitchen and guests can choose from a menu including salmon and free range scrambled eggs, a herb & tomato omelette, freshly baked continental pastries or a full cooked farmhouse breakfast.
Our bed and breakfast rooms have a fresh and contemporary feel and are fully equipped to ensure our guests have an enjoyable and comfortable stay. The rooms in our Stable Annexe offer private accommodation away from the main property, with ensuite facilities, Fairtrade refreshments, TV & DVD player and complimentary toiletries. Our beds have duckdown duvets and pillows, and white cotton bed linen, with tasteful cushions and throws. Outside these rooms you will find patio tables and chairs which overlook our country garden. We can accommodate doubles, singles (in a double room), twins and families.
Farrier’s self catering cottage has that home from home feel and offers everything you need for a relaxing break. The accommodation comprises of 2 double bedrooms, 1 twin room, 2 bathrooms, a living room and a kitchen/diner. The cottage has disabled access with 1 of the bedrooms and bathrooms situated on the ground floor. There is plenty of off-road parking for all accommodation and bikes can be garaged if required.
The local area offers many tourist attractions and outdoor sports. For a cultural visit there are a number of National Trust and English Heritage sites on our doorstep including Belvoir Castle, Belton House, Grimsthorpe Castle, and Burghley House. If you are interested in outdoor sports golfing is available at Greetham Valley, Belton Woods and Stoke Rochford, and Ornby Lakes and Rutland Water are recommended for fishing. Buckminster gliding club is only 4 miles away and Holme Pier Point in Nottingham offers white water rafting, quad biking and archery. If you just fancy a day of relaxation Eden Hall day spa is a short drive away.
Rutland water is a local attraction in it’s own right as it has something for everyone. The attractive 3,100 acre reservoir has an international reputation for providing a balance of sport, leisure and wildlife conservation. You can try energetic sports such as windsurfing, hire a dinghy, bicycle or fishing boat or just relax by the water and watch the action. Visitors don’t have to be sailors or anglers to go afloat. Some of the best views are from the Rutland Belle as it manoeuvres around the lake on it’s four mile cruise out of Whitwell harbour. If it’s raining you can visit the Normanton church museum then the Butterfly & Aquatic display and the Birdwatching centre before relaxing in the Harbour Bar or Water’s Edge cafe bar. Rutland Water is a mere 20 minute drive from the bed and breakfast.
For a great day out for children Twin Lakes in Melton Mowbray is a family theme park with 70 acres of attractions. With a variety of indoor and outdoor activities and hundreds of animals, birds and reptiles there is plenty to entertain the whole family.
Within walking distance of the Bed & Breakfast guests will find a local post office, a well stocked village store and a very friendly pub. A mere half a mile away the village boasts Woolsthorpe Manor, the birth place of Sir Isaac Newton and a popular National Trust tourist attraction. There is a bridal way at the rear of the accommodation which allows guests to reach all local amenities on foot.
Also within a short drive of the bed and breakfast there is a great range of local pubs and restaurants including The Olive Branch in Clipsham, an award winning country pub, and Harry’s Place in Great Gonerby, the smallest Michelin starred restaurant in the country. The White Lion, in the village of Colsterworth itself, offers a warm welcome and good home cooked food and the Berkeley Arms in Wymondham, the Cholmeley Arms in Burton Coggles and The Chequers Inn at Woolsthorpe-By-Belvoir are all well worth a visit.
Through out the year there is an ongoing programme of events and thousands flock to the area for the popular Lincoln Christmas Market, but there are equally good Christmas markets at Burghley House and Belvoir Castle. The East Midlands annual food and drink fayre is held at Brooksby Hall in Melton Mowbray, and again Burghley House caters for this audience once a year. The Burghley Horse trials is a huge annual event with hundreds of food, drink, craft, house and living stalls to whet your appetite and Arena UK in Grantham hosts regular equestrian competitions and horse sales. And if you’re interested in antiques, Newark boasts the largest antique fair in Europe with 2 dates every other month.
If staying for a number of nights Stamford and Oakham are market towns well worth a visit. Historically Stamford was the East Midlands transportation hub, with plenty of prospering merchants and lawyers, resulting in the many fine houses you see in the town today. The town was designated a conservation area in 1967 and is almost perfectly unspoilt with many Medieval and Georgian buildings. Increasingly, Stamford is gaining a reputation for elegant and funky cloths boutiques as well as it’s second hand bookshops and antiques, and there is a wealth of pubs, restaurants and coffee shops to choose from.
The town of Grantham is a mere 6 miles away from the Bed & Breakfast and is today renowned as the birthplace of Lady Margaret Thatcher. From Grantham there is a fast and frequent National Rail Service that heads south to London Kings Cross in 1 hour and 15 minutes and North to Edinburgh, and beyond, in a matter of a few hours. Leeds and York are also accessible by train in just over an hour.
To further enhance your experience at the Bed & Breakfast we can offer beauty treatments in your room including a range of massages, facials and reflexology. Further details are available on request and treatments are offered on a first come, first served basis by booking in advance.
We have had great reviews from a large number of our guests, many of whom return time and time again to enjoy a better standard of bed & breakfast accommodation. So if you’re planning a holiday in the Lincolnshire and Rutland countryside, are visiting family and friends locally or are a business client working in the Grantham or Stamford area, The Stables bed and breakfast could make a great base for you.
